An Ambient Intelligence System for Assisted Living
2017
Nowadays, the population's average age is constantly increasing, and thus the need for specialized home assistance is on the rise. Smart homes especially tailored to meet elderly and disabled people's needs can help them maintaining their autonomy, whilst ensuring their safety and well-being. This paper proposes a complete context-aware system for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), which infers user's actions and context, analyzing its past and current behavior to detect anomalies and prevent possible emergencies. The proposed system exploits Dynamic Bayesian Networks to merge raw data coming from heterogeneous sensors and infer user's behavior and health conditions. A rule-based reasoner is ab…
Reasons, Rules, Exceptions. Towards a Psychological Account
2018
In this paper we defend a psychological account of rule-based reasoning, specifically of the relationship between rules and exceptions. The topic of our inquiry are the relations between rules, the reasons underlying them, and exceptions. In analysing these relations, first, we outline an apparent paradox, the “paradox of rules”, and a related problem, the “problem of reconsideration”. Then, we propose a solution to, or better dissolution of, the paradox, grounded in an account of the psychological processes underlying rule-application and reconsideration. We claim, that is, that the problem of reconsideration should be answered by appealing to matters of sheer psychological fact. The upsho…
DYNAMIC SEMANTIC USER PROFILING FROM IMPLICIT WEB NAVIGATION DATA
2014
International audience; On the Web, pages are often dynamically generated and allow publishers to individually adapt contents to each viewer. Underlying systems must correctly understand the user's context - crucial especially in the case of online advertisement placement. The article at hand describes our proposition of a novel profiling system, adapted to the special needs of digital advertising. Based on Semantic Web Technologies, the MindMinings system relies on an ontology to enable thorough understanding of each user's context and needs. The underlying ontology structure also provides enhanced interoperability with semantically annotated knowledge resources, notably vocabularies from …
A Context-Aware System for Ambient Assisted Living
2017
In the near future, the world's population will be characterized by an increasing average age, and consequently, the number of people requiring for a special household assistance will dramatically rise. In this scenario, smart homes will significantly help users to increase their quality of life, while maintaining a great level of autonomy. This paper presents a system for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) capable of understanding context and user's behavior by exploiting data gathered by a pervasive sensor network. The knowledge inferred by adopting a Bayesian knowledge extraction approach is exploited to disambiguate the collected observations, making the AAL system able to detect and predict…
